The After School Dance Fund (ASDF) was established as a501(c)(3) non-profit organization under applicable IRS rules, to support the organization and financing of the Annual Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) Latin Dance Competition at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. ASDF’s mission and goal, besides organizing and financing the Competition for the past two years, is to develop an ongoing Artistic and Technical support mechanism for all existing MCPS High Schools Latin Dance Clubs, and to assist others wanting to establish a new club to do so.
These programs promote cross cultural awareness; bridging the gap between communities, strengthening family values and empower students of all backgrounds, to share their heritage and culture which allows them to communicate better in school and at home, and continue their personal and educational growth in order to become healthy and positive members of our global society. ASDF was founded by Ricardo Loaiza, a local Latin Dance Instructor, who for 12 years volunteered with the MCPS Afterschool Latin Dance Programs for Hispanic students.
While the MCPS participating Latin Dance Clubs have been instrumental in operating and administering their school’s individual afterschool programs, the school sponsors who volunteer in running their clubs after school hours, continue to seek services from ASDF for additional support to help the students in these Latin Dance Clubs prepare for the Annual Competition. Six (6) MCPS schools competed in 2010, and seven (7) schools in 2011. In 2012 we are counting on the participation of eight (8) schools, including over 200 students competing. The annual Competition is growing rapidly and the school sponsors work hard to provide resources to keep the students fully engaged in the Latin Dance Clubs, their academics and their school communities.
Representing their schools and celebrating their heritage at the Competition, is a key component of maintaining the student’s high level of motivation and enthusiasm for the Latin Dance Programs. Therefore, ASDF’s goal is to continue to promote and support health, exercise, Latin heritage, and unity through Latin Dance education.
